is it possible to slow the game down a little. I am sure when i used to play there was an option to play beginners or expert ?

Start playing in lower leagues, the games will be much slower and make more sense. Work your way up, maybe by starting a career in English div 4 for example. SWOS is harder than the console versions which had difficulty levels.
